Located on Kodiak Island, Alaska, Fossil Beach has a fun beach break that is good when small and a really good right-hand reef that turns on when the swell picks up. The reef is a right and breaks for up to 300 meters over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Fossil Beach?
Gets good between head high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if small and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat inconsistent (4/10) and will be empty (1/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the Southwest. Works on all tides but slack is best to reduce currents.
We recommend wearing a 5/4 year-round with hood and booties. The temperatures range from 12 degrees in August to 4 degrees in winter. See the temperature chart for more data on this.
