Located towards the Northern edge of Massachusetts, Cape Ann is a powerful beach break that unloads over a sand bottom. The waves here require some surf ability and breakup to 50 meters providing some great sections for manoeuvres and sometimes barrels. Local Swell magnet. Keep and eye out for a decent left in the south end which is less likely to close out.
What are the best surf conditions for Cape Ann?
Gets good from waist high to overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard when bigger. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and is generally uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, and Southeast. Works best on a low to mid tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when the water temperatures rise to 19 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is necessary when the water temperatures drop to 4 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
