Located in Durham – Northumberland, England, Sunderland is a fun beach break that offers up some decent sections for manoeuvres when the conditions line up. The waves here are easy to surf and break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom. There is also a good wedging right off of a harbour wall in Roker.
What are the best surf conditions for Sunderland?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and will usually have a crew on it (6/10). The best winds are from the Southwest. The best swells are from the East, North, Northeast, and Southeast. Works on a mid to high tide best.
We recommend wearing a 4/3 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 6 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
