Located in Santa Barbara in Southern California, Sandspit is a crazy right-hand point that is formed off of a breakwater. The waves here peel over a very shallow sand bottom and can be nuts, breaking for up to 200 meters providing both barreling sections and walls for turns. The wave starts with a heavy, angled backwash, so be aware of a difficult take-off (or sit to the side and pick off the waves that buck off their rider at the start). Get it right though and you could score the wave of your life!
What are the best surf conditions for Sandspit?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a standard shortboard here. Sandspit is best for intermediate and up surfers. The surf here is not very consistent (4/10) and will be very crowded when it is good (7/10). The best winds are offshore from the Northeast, the best tides are low, and the best swells are large and from the West.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temps rise to 17 degrees. In winter a 4/3 is best when the water temps drop to around 13 degrees. See the temperature below for more data on this.
