Located in Southern Orange County in Southern California, Doheny State Beach is a fun cobblestone break that breaks for up to 50 meters. The waves here are slow and mushy, easy to surf and ideal for learning. Famous for being mentioned in a Beach Boy’s song. Be careful of the pollution in the water after rains.
What are the best surf conditions for Doheny State Beach?
Gets good between waist-high to triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here or a fish if you need your board to be under 8 feet. Doheny is best suited to beginners, although intermediates and advanced surfers will be happy if they want to cruise. The surf here is very consistent (8/10) and will be pretty crowded most days (7/10). The best winds are from the North. It takes swell from almost any direction, Northwest all the way to South. It works on any tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when the water temperature rises to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when the water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the water temperature chart below for more data on this.
