Located in North Orange County in Southern California, 17th Street is an excellent beach break that breaks over a sand bottom. The waves here can be a bit heavy (much more so than they look) and break for up to 150 meters providing a mushy takeoff into a steeper section for ripping or sometimes barrels.
What are the best surf conditions for 17 street?
Gets good between head high and triple overhead. A longboard will work here when it is small, but a shortboard is best here when there is any juice. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will be crowded when it is good (8/10). The wave can work on all tides. The best winds are from the Northeast and the best swells are from the South, Southwest, or West.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when the water temperature rises to 20 degrees. In the winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 when the water temperature drops to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
