Located in Southern Peru, El Olón is a quality, bigger wave left-hand reef break that throws out big barrels when the swell is on. The waves here require your A-game and respect; make sure you know your limits before paddling out. The waves break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a boulder-covered bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for El Olon?
El Olón gets good between head high and triple overhead +. A shortboard, step-up, and then your biggest board are all good for this spot. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers when smaller and only advanced surfers when big. The surf here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 22°C (72°F). In the winter, a 4/3 wetsuit is best as water temps drop to about 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
