Located in Piura, Peru, Punta Ballenas is an alright left point that offers up some hollow sections when on, but it is usually a bit messy and sectiony. The waves here are not easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a sharp rock bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Punta Ballenas?
Punta Ballenas gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard then stepping up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the southeast. The best swells are from the south, southwest, and west. Punta Ballenas works best on a mid to high tide to cover the rocks.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 23°C (73°F). In the winter, a 3/2 wetsuit is best when water temperatures drop to 18°C (64°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
