Located in Atacama, Chile, Isla Dama is a small island that offers up a few breaks, one of which is a sweet right-hand reef that can be excellent in the right conditions. The waves here can be challenging and break for up to 50 meters (164 feet) over a rock bottom. Getting there is a bit long-winded, requiring a 2-hour boat cruise from Punta Choros. The island is frequented by sea lions and penguins, making for an extra scenic trip. If you don’t have the 2-hour boat ride in you, local knowledge indicates there are a few beachies north of the pier back towards Punta Choros.
What are the best surf conditions for Isla Dama?
It gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard, then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. It works on all tides.
