Located in Santa Catarina, Brazil, Matadeiro is a regional classic. An excellent left-hand river mouth that will barrel hard over a long sandbank. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a sand bottom. The main issue is that it is extremely fickle.
What are the best surf conditions for Matadeiro?
It gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard, then a step up as the size increases. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is almost always flat (1/10) and might be busy depending on forecasting skills (5/10). The best winds are from the Southwest. The best swells are from the Southeast. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 26°C (79°F). In the winter, a 3/2 wetsuit is best when water temperatures drop to 19°C (66°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
