Located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, about 2 km offshore there is a small rocky islet, Ilha do Lobos, home to a heavy barreling left reef break nicknamed the Brazilian Teahupoo. The waves here are heavy, ledgy, and thick, requiring plenty of surf acumen to surf safely. They break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a shallow rock reef.
What are the best surf conditions for Ilha do Lobos?
It gets good between double and triple overhead. We recommend riding a step-up board, then a tow board as the size picks up. This break is suitable for advanced-level surfers only. The surf here is not consistent (4/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, South, and Southeast. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summers when water temperatures rise to 24°C (75°F). In the winter, a 4/3 wetsuit is best when water temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
