Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Itauna is an excellent left-hand reef break that offers up large and clean conditions often, suitable for ripping into. The waves here require some skill to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. The inside rights are often good as well, referred to as “Expresso.”
What are the best surf conditions for Itauna?
It gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if small and a shortboard, then a step up as the size increases. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will generally have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, South, Southeast, and Southwest. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summers when water temperatures rise to 26°C (79°F). In the winter, a spring suit will work when water temperatures drop to 21°C (70°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
