Located just a few miles outside Haleiwa off the Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore of Oahu is the friendly spot Chun’s Reef. It is a wide sandy beach typically hosting beach umbrellas, icy coolers, locals and their family pets. The shoreline at Chun’s Reef is rocky, with sandy areas good for swimming. This reef offers up both lefts and rights known to be mellow and perfect for longboarding. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef.

What are the best surf conditions for Chun’s Reef?

Gets good between waist high to overhead. We recommend riding a longboard normally and a shortboard for the biggest days. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will usually have a laid back crew (6/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the North, Northeast, and Northwest. Works on all tides.

We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round here. Water temperatures don’t fall below 24 and range as high as 27. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.

Getting there

To get around Hawaii, a rental car is best. Chun’s Reef is about a 30 minute drive from the Honolulu International Airport. In the winter months (November-February), traffic is a bit slow, and it can take longer.

Take H1 Freeway, Westbound. Stay on the HI Freeway for approximately six miles. Look for signs for the H2 Freeway, Northbound (North Shore/Wahiawa) Merge right onto the H2 Freeway. Continue on the H2 Freeway North to Wahiawa. Exit at Wahiawa (Exit 8) on to 80 (Kamehameha Hwy) through Wahiawa. Continue Northbound, 80 connects with 99. Stay on 99 to Haleiwa. The road now bypasses Haleiwa and becomes route 83. Continue on 83 approximately 20 minutes toward Kahuku. Chun’s Reef is located about three miles past the second Haleiwa exit, off the Kamehameha Hwy. It is the second beach access you will come to, just past Laniakea Beach.
