Located on the Outer Banks in North Carolina, S Turns is a very popular, fun beach break setup that unloads over a shallow sand bottom. This wave has been compared to beach breaks over in France like Hossegor. The waves here are heavy and explode for about 100 meters providing some excellent, deep pits. Although there are waves of similar quality around, media attention has made this break-in particular quite the zoo at times. Strong currents when big.
What are the best surf conditions for S Turns?
Gets good from waist high to double overhead. A shortboard or step up is best here when the waves turn on. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and can get super crowded (9/10). Works on all tides depending on the sandbars. Offshore winds come from the West. Works on swells from the North, Northeast, South, Southeast, and East.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 28 degrees in August. In winter a 5/4 is best because water temperatures drop to around 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
