Located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Avalon Pier is a fun beachie that breaks over a sand bottom. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 150 meters providing some great sections for manoeuvres. It might be worth a walk down the beach to find a quieter sandbar.
What are the best surf conditions for Avalon Pier?
Gets good from waist high to double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard when smaller and a shortboard when the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and can get quite crowded at times (8/10). The best winds are anything with West in it. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, South, and Southeast. Works best on mid to low tide.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 27 degrees. In winter we recommend wearing a 5/4 wetsuit when water temps drop to 7 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
