Located on Long Island, New York, Fortress is a fun reef break that peels over a boulder and sand bottom. The waves here wall up nicely and are pretty easy to surf, breaking for up to 100 meters providing great sections for manoeuvres.
What are the best surf conditions for Fortress?
Gets good from waist high to overhead. We recommend riding your longboard here when smaller and a shortboard when bigger. Fortress is best for intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and can get really crowded (8/10). The best winds are from the West. The best swells are from the East, South, Southeast, and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temps rise to 23 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 with hood, booties, and gloves is required when water temps drop to 4 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
