Located on the gulf coast of Texas, South Padre Island is the premier surf spot in Texas. It is a beach break where to continental shelf drops off quickly, allowing for long period swell to make its way in unhindered. The waves here are pretty straightforward to surf and break for up to 150 meters, providing some easy-going sections perfect for longboarding.
What are the best surf conditions for South Padre Island?
Gets good from waist high to overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here every day. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and generally uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, South, and Southeast. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 30 degrees. In winter a 3/2 is all you need for the 17 degree water. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
