Located in Southeastern Florida, Reef Road is the best big wave spot in the state. It breaks over a reef bottom, dredging hard for a long way. The waves here are generally heavy and break for up to 300 meters barreling the whole way providing some great chances for a deep, large pit. Holds size very well, just needs a big swell. Be aware that this wave is in a private community. Park outside of the private roads and walk on the beach for 20 minutes to get there.
What are the best surf conditions for Reef Road?
Gets good from overhead to triple overhead plus. A shortboard will work until about double overhead, then a step up is best. This break is suitable to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is not consistent (4/10) and gets crowded until it hits around double overhead and the paddle out starts filtering the lineup (9/10). The best winds are offshore from the West. The best swells are big from the North and Northeast. Works best on a low tide.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 30 degrees. In winter a springsuit is perfect for the 22-degree water. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
