Located in North Orange County in Southern California, Blackies is an excellent sandy left point set up that peels over a well-defined sandbar. It breaks rarely here, and when it does the waves are generally a little tricky to surf, breaking for up to 150 meters. Great sections for turns and hacks all the way down the line. Blackies gets its name from the bar that sits directly in front of the lineup.
What are the best surf conditions for Blackies?
Gets good starting at waist high all the way up to double overhead. A shortboard is best here when it is on. Blackies is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. It does not break here often (3/10) and will always be crowded when it is good (8/10). The best winds are offshore from the Northeast. The best swells are big and due West. Works best on a low tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when the water temperatures hit 20 degrees. In the winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit when the water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
