Located in Palos Verdes, Southern California, Lunada Bay is one of the rare big wave spots in the area. It is a reef break that crashes over a boulder covered bottom. The waves here are big, nasty, and powerful although they hold very good shape. Be aware that this spot is known for localism and there have been incidents that involved the police on more than one occasion. Not recommended for those travelling to town unless they know someone that surfs it regularly.
What are the best surf conditions for Lunada Bay?
Gets good from overhead to any size above that. We recommend riding a shortboard, step up, or gun depending on the size. Lunada Bay is a spot for intermediate surfers and advanced surfers only. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10). It might not be crowded but the vibe will be hostile (7/10). The best winds are offshore from the East. The best swells are big from the West or Northwest. It works on any tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer here when the water temperature rises the 19 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to a chilly 14 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
