Located in Eastern Santa Barbara County in Southern California, Tarpits is a fun beachy that breask over a boulder and sand bottom. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf and break for up to 50 meters providing great sections for turns and hacks. Be aware of water quality here after the rains.
What are the best surf conditions for Tarpits?
Gets good between chest high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard here, or a step up when bigger. Tarpits is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) but will be crowded when good (6/10). The best winds blow from the Northeast. Works best on lower tides. The best swells come from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 17 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
