Just at the northern tip of Big Sur in Central California, you’ll find Andrew Molera State Park. If you hike about a mile in, there is a picturesque cobblestone beach with a river mouth. Here there is a fun, righthand river mouth/point break. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and can peel for up to 200 meters on the right swell. Be aware of the large, local wildlife.
What are the best surf conditions for Andrew Molera State Park
The point gets good between waist high and triple overhead. It needs a big swell to get working though. We recommend a longboard when it’s smaller and a shortboard when the size picks up. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The break usually has a wave (5/10) but can get crowded on weekends (5/10). The best winds come from the Northeast, and it is sheltered from most bad winds. The best swells come from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West. It works best on a lower tide.
We recommend a 4/3 in the summer here as water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when the water temperatures drop to 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
