Translated from the local Nias language Mangalui Ndulu means “Wave Searcher“ in local Nias dialect. The Mangalui Ndulu is a grandiose 84 ft timber sloop, custom built for the sole objective of wave hunting. For 2 decades her experienced captain and crew have introduced some of the best surfers to some of the best uncrowded sessions. The charter’s reputation is well earned.

The tender is a speedboat called “The Foxy Lady,” and hits speeds of 35knots with a Yamaha 200hp. When the wind switches or you want to quickly check your options, The Foxy Lady is there to assist. It is also used for afternoon deep sea fishing. The Mangalui Ndulu is stocked with diving gear and able to quickly refill tanks. If there are any qualified divers on board, they will be delighted to take a look at the tropical reefs below.

The Mangalui has a larger fuel, water, and refrigerator capacity than most. This allows for further travel distances and hence greater flexibility with schedule and destinations including islands chains apart from the Mentawai’s . To maintain full time communications there are 2 satellite telephones, which also allow for internet service. Accommodations are for 8 guests.

To keep you taste buds and belly satisfied you will dine on the best fresh fish, produce prepared 3 times a day. Plenty of snacks are on hand whenever you get hungry or need an energy boost. Soft drinks, juices, wine and your ration of colkd Bintang beer are all included.

Surf & season

The Mentawai Islands has some of the best surf in the world. There are more perfect left and rights in one region than anywhere on earth. The Mentawais receive swell all year round with the most consistent season between March and November. Surf uncrowded waves at a large variety of reefs, beach breaks, point breaks and secluded bays.

Although there are waves year-round, and the “off” season has potential for un-crowded perfection, the best time of year is during the dry season. From around late March to early November, during the southern hemisphere’s winter, the Indian Ocean produces non-stop groundswells.

Consistent swells are generated in the roaring forties and arrive to Indo reef groomed perfection. Tropical, clear blue water and a wide selection of wave types accommodate skill levels from intermediate to pro.

All drinks are also supplied onboard the Mangalui – incl all soft drinks , juices , beer and wine, plus you are welcome to bring your own duty free spirits.

The Mangalui carries 5000 litres of diesel. She is powered by a Nissan Diesel V8 270hp for its main propulsion.

Generators are running 24 hours a day to keep all equipment up and running.

Reverse osmosis Water maker keeps clean water supplied for any duration.

Super stable purpose built surf taxi dingy has 25hp with a spare engine up on deck ready to go.

The drive compressor in the lazarette is run by a three phase electric motor allowing quick tank refills. BCD jackets, regulators, weight belts and other dive/snorkelling equipment are provided. About one dozen mask, snorkel, fin sets and for those qualified scuba divers there are scuba tanks x 4 with full diving sets x 2 (BCD, regulator, weight belt). Mangalui’s fishing equipment is top of the range with four good game rods fitted with Shimano TLD 25 reels, heap of rapala and skirt lures, two spinning setups with plenty of poppers to get into the shallows, plenty of bottom fishing tackle, Sea Hornett spear guns 4’6” x 3 and 5’6” x 1.

Full communications while at sea with 2 satellite telephones in service including internet facilities. These are all available to you onboard (at an extra cost) meaning you can keep in touch with your family, friends and business while on your surf trip.

Getting there

Depending on the specific charter you are booked on, you may land in either Padang, Medan, or Jakarta. Regardless where you land, you will be met outside of customs by a crew member and taken to the boat.
